“Her previous programs failed because they let her replace drug addiction with alcoholism and sex addiction.”
Many of our residents face more than one challenge which we uncover during our comprehensive assessment process. All clients are unique and require individualized care. At Sure Haven, we make a thorough assessment of each client to determine the duration and extent of their substance abuse. We then conduct a psychological assessment to identify any mental health issues, such as depression, anxiety, and personality disorders. Each client also undergoes a complete medical evaluation to determine their medication, fitness, and nutritional needs.

The elements of customized care may also include spirituality, group therapy, process groups, recovery topic lectures, dream interpretation, interpersonal communication, and group activities. These treatments re-train the brain to enjoy life without drugs, alcohol, of addictive behavior. We are unique because we release support gradually through the various stages of recovery, from our 90 Day Residential Inpatient Program all the way to our Independent Living Program. Our clients do not have to bounce from one facility to another, constantly having to reform relationships with new staffers. With Sure Haven, they are joining a support community that will see them all the way to recovery and beyond.
Substance Abuse/Alcoholism
Regular use of a substance in amounts or in situations that cause dysfunctional patterns of behavior that impair normal functioning. This leads to a failure to fulfill major role obligations at work, home, school, and can result in physically hazardous behavior and interpersonal problems. By changing the coping behavior from destructive to constructive we cultivate a balanced lifestyle that reduces the possibility of relapse. Random drug testing and regular AA attendance is combined with therapy, medication management, nutrition, and exercise.
Dual Diagnosis
Sure Haven is unique because we truly “get it”. We understand that substance abuse is often caused by an underlying issue, such as physical trauma or bi-polar disorder. These issues must be dealt with concurrently in order for the treatment to be successful. Without this dual diagnosis and treatment many patients will relapse into their addictive behaviors. This is why our programs are so effective. Our highly trained staff will create a treatment program exclusively tailored to meet your specific needs.
Trauma/EMDR
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing is a powerful method of psychotherapy that has helped an estimated two million people of all ages find relief from many types of psychological distress. EMDR uses eye movements to reduce the intensity of disturbing thoughts, associated trauma, cravings and compulsions. EMDR has a direct effect on the way that the brain processes information, freeing the person from reliving the images, sounds, and feelings when specific events are brought to mind. Each indepth session lasts about 60 to 90 minutes and usually deals with a single traumatic event. One session is often sufficient to deal with a particular trauma.
Eating Disorder
Eating Disorders are most often caused by low self-esteem issues that distort a persons self-image, leading to food restriction or binging and purging. This condition is usually accompanied by destructive behaviors such as self-induced vomiting, misuse of laxatives, diuretics or other medications, fasting, or excessive exercise. We help our clients improve their self-image and self-love through affirmations, volunteer work, pet therapy, and nurturing them in a loving, supportive environment. Our approach is to “love you until you can love yourself”. This creates a safe, positive place to heal that is remarkably effective.
Sex Addiction
Sex Addiction is a condition that often accompanies the early stages of sobriety because they are seeking “acceptance” and a distraction from the absence of drugs or alcohol. It can also stem from a lack of self-esteem and is used as a way to feel better about themselves. We help our clients to develop a sense of purpose in their lives. They learn to take pride in who they are, which builds a stronger self-image. When a person accepts themselves as a person of worth, they are less likely to seek acceptance from other people through sexual contact.
Love Addiction
Love Addiction is similar to sex addiction with one important difference – it is the pursuit of relationships rather than the physical act of sex that is the driving force of the compulsion. It is a force that causes people to fiercely attach themselves to another person. This is a form of “anti-love” that seeks to receive rather than give. Restoring a vibrant, confident self-image is the key to breaking the shackles of Love Addiction. We help our clients realize that they have much to give, because they are exceptional and deserving of love.
Self Harm
Self Harm is a deliberate self-injury without the intent to die. It is most commonly encountered in three main groups: mental retardation, psychotic disorders, and personality disorders. Some have stated that, as they watch the blood flow from the cut, they feel as if some internal tension is flowing from them. This is an escape from extreme anxiety resulting from one or more traumas. We utilize various modalities, such as Eye Movement De-sensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and group therapy to help the client work through these painful issues.
Prevention Strategies
At Sure Haven, we know that communication between families, clients, and staff is vital for a successful recovery. This is a team effort that we take very seriously. Any issue, or sign of potential relapse is addressed immediately and communicated to all parties. We encourage family members to partner with us to support the client as they attend AA/NA meetings, therapy sessions, medication management screenings, regular drug testing, and nutrition and fitness programs. Living a balanced, loving lifestyle helps to dissolve the addictive behavior, lessoning the risk of relapse. This is why family involvement is so essential.
Behavior Modification Therapy
This is based on the notion that a person’s basic core beliefs have a profound effect on their feelings and emotions, which significantly influences their behavior. By changing their thoughts and dysfunctional core beliefs, they can create positive emotions and enhanced self-esteem. This is instrumental in transforming destructive behaviors into positive ones. Rather than self-medicating with drugs or alcohol to overcome negative thoughts or feelings, our clients learn to view life through a prism of hope supported by new, positive thoughts. If a person can change their mind, they can change their life.
Detox Assistance
If a new client is still using or is experiencing withdrawal symptoms, she is first admitted into a licensed, medically supervised detoxification clinic. This is a vital first step that must be supervised by a doctor. Typically, the de-tox lasts between three to seven days, at which time the client then joins our community at Sure Haven.
Life Skills
Many daily functioning skills, which are taken for granted by the general public, can be quite challenging for a recovering woman. Life Skills Therapy guides them in such areas as personal hygiene, washing and drying clothes, grocery shopping, budgeting, housekeeping, grocery shopping, and cooking. By performing these daily activities together they learn how to work as a team, to trust one another, and to form lasting bonds of friendship and support. These valuable Life Skills will improve their chances for success as they re-enter society. Life Skills Therapy is essential to recovery because it reduces the stress associated with everyday living and creates a solid foundation for re-entering society. For a newly recovering woman, meeting the ordinary challenges of daily life without pharmacological help can seen daunting. By empowering women with life skills, we enable them to cope successfully with their new sober lifestyle. We teach recovering women how to joyfully perform day-to-day tasks without drugs, alcohol, or giving in to their past addictive behaviors. By removing the stress from the basic tasks of life, they are free to embrace their sobriety with renewed confidence and purpose.
Nutrition
At Sure Haven, we believe proper nutrition that is specific to a woman’s unique dietary needs is vital to a successful and lasting recovery. Our inspirational staff coaches clients in how to select and prepare these supportive meals. As a result, clients can make healthier eating choices for life. Coupled with optimal nutrition, fitness offers the benefits of a healthy daily discipline, a restoration of physical health, and a natural source of stress relief. Our clients regularly visit the gym for cardiovascular, resistance, and body sculpting exercises. This improves health, body image, self-esteem, and vitality (just plain feels great!). In addition, regular yoga therapy provides an opportunity to begin each day in peaceful serenity while strengthening and stretching the body. The practice of yoga also stimulates the lymphatic system, which accelerates the detoxification process.
Relationship Building Activities
Sure Haven clients are encouraged to participate in our group excursions to local museums, beaches, social events and recreational activities. These trips teach recovering women how to reconnect with the joy of drug-free social interaction. Many recovering women come from a background of anxiety, alienation, and a distrust of other women. Discovering the bond of female friendship can be a powerful source of fulfillment and mutual support for continued sobriety. These reassuring, supportive relationships strengthen communication skills and build trust in one another. Reaching out to a new, valued friend can translate into forming healthy personal and professional relationships, which can become a powerful gateway to social re-integration.
Academic and Career Counseling
A critical element of full recovery is planning for a successful future. We offer Academic and Career Counseling in order to help our clients create a roadmap to reaching their full potential. Achieving financial security and possessing a strong sense of purpose are the cornerstones of a lasting recovery. In this way sobriety becomes much more satisfying than the addiction and leads to a brighter future for herself and her family.
Family Involvement
Family members are strongly encouraged to participate in their loved one’s recovery. They are the most critical element in creating a successful outcome. Addiction is a family disease. It adversely affects the entire family and can render it completely dysfunctional, adding to the addicts feeling of alienation and despair. Sometimes the root cause of the addiction can be found within the family relationships. We work closely with the family to identify any contributing factors to the addictive behavior, and incorporate a resolution strategy into the Comprehensive Treatment Program created exclusively for each patient. It is imperative that the family is totally committed to the healing process. This includes themselves as well as the recovering loved one. Together, the family can be a positive support system for each other, increasing the possibility of a lasting recovery.
Eastern Modalities
These ancient disciplines have become an integral component of our helping women achieve a successful and lasting recovery. They work synergistically to create balance and remove energetic and emotional blockages that are contributing to the addictive disorders. Our patients experience increased vitality and a renewed sense of peace. These modalities integrate seamlessly with all of the other therapies and counseling available at Sure Haven.
Reiki
Reiki is the process of healing using the power of Universal Life Energy channeled through the hands of the practitioner. Reiki therapies are known to improve one’s spiritual, physical, and emotional well being, and are particularly effective in treating drug and alcohol addiction, as well as emotional problems.

Self-Defense Techniques
Self-defense training builds self-esteem, confidence and self-reliance, as well as adding a layer of protection against physical abusers, who may be an underlying cause of the addictive behavior.
Tai Chi
Tai Chi reduces anxiety and depression, improves sleep quality, lowers blood pressure, and improves overall feeling of well being. Tai Chi also promotes psychological balance, which can mitigate the effects of Bi-Polar Disorder.
Qigong
Qigong is the art and science of using breathing techniques, gentle movement, and meditation to cleanse, strengthen, and circulate the Life Energy (qi). Qigong practice can lead to better health and vitality and a tranquil state of mind.
I Ching
I Ching is one of the oldest documents in the world. It illuminates the principles of the Tao, which is the Universal flow of energy that underlies all action and permeates all being. It presents 64 adaptable “sections” that suggest possible outcomes to any situation. The I Ching is very useful in challenging entrenched negative thinking and revealing more positive alternate choices.
Mindfulness Training
