Eastern Holistic Philosophies

In today’s modern society, the focus is shifting away from conventional, Western medicine and returning to Eastern medicine practices. Addiction treatment is no different.

Holistic treatment centers are becoming more popular as they utilize less conventional forms of treatment. Yoga, meditation and mindfulness training, combined with healthy nutritional practices, are often used to treat the individual in the most complete way possible. The focus of holistic treatment is to help our women live better lives as a whole.

These ancient disciplines have become an integral component at Sure Haven. We are helping women achieve a successful and lasting recovery in conjunction with working synergistically to create balance and remove energetic and emotional blockages that are contributing to the addictive disorders. Our clients experience increased vitality and a renewed sense of peace. These modalities integrate seamlessly with all of the other therapies and counseling available at Sure Haven.

Reiki

One of the greatest Reiki healing health benefits is stress reduction and relaxation. Reiki healing is a natural therapy that gently balances life energies and brings health and well being to the recipient and promotes health and well being of the entire physical, emotional and psychic body. Therefore it is truly a system of attaining and promoting wholeness of Mind, Body and Spirit.

Reiki creates deep relaxation and aids the body to release stress and tension, accelerates the body’s self-healing abilities, aids better sleep, reduces blood pressure, can help with acute (injuries) and chronic problems and aides the breaking of addictions, helps relieve pain, removes energy blockages, adjusts the energy flow of the endocrine system bringing the body into balance and harmony, assists the body in cleaning itself from toxins and reduces some of the side effects of drugs and helps the body to recover. Reiki also helps expedite spiritual growth and emotional clearing.

When clients are relaxed and stress-free, they are able to restore the natural ability to heal.

Self Defense Techniques

Self-defense training builds self-esteem, confidence and self-reliance, as well as adding a layer of protection against physical abusers, who may be an underlying cause of the addictive behavior.

There are some intellectual and psychological benefits of this training as well which include improved focus and concentration, increased self-confidence and self-awareness, better self-control and respect for self and others. It also provides an outlet for creativity and an individualistic expression.

Tai Chi and Qigong

Tai chi and qigong do much more for recovering addicts than basic exercise or meditation alone. These ancient health practices combine classical conditioning with visualization, breath work, and meditation to create a powerful complementary therapy for most maladies, including addiction to drugs, alcohol, sex, gambling, and other compulsions.

Tai chi is sometimes described as “meditation in motion” because it promotes serenity through gentle movements – connecting the mind and body. Originally developed in ancient China for self-defense, tai chi evolved into a graceful form of exercise that’s now used for stress reduction and to help with a variety of other health conditions.

Tai Chi reduces anxiety and depression, improves sleep quality, lowers blood pressure, and improves overall feeling of physical, emotional and spiritual wholeness. Tai Chi also promotes psychological balance, which can mitigate the effects of Bi-Polar Disorder.

Qigong is the art and science of using breathing techniques, gentle movement, and meditation to cleanse, strengthen, and circulate the Life Energy. Qigong practice can lead to better health and vitality and a tranquil state of mind.

Meditation

Meditation has served an essential metaphysical link in eastern spiritual cultures for millennia, but only recently have western medical practitioners recognized its value in the therapeutic treatment of addictions. Meditation is not offered as a cure all for dependence and drug seeking behaviors, but when included in Sure Haven’s comprehensive drug treatment program, meditation offers increased self-awareness, a renewed spiritual religious connection, increased creativity, and a decrease in negative emotional responses to the stresses in life.

Because meditation induces increased peace of mind, increases a self-awareness of negative behaviors and emotions, and reduces relapse-provoking stressors, it offers therapeutic benefit to patients in recovery from substance abuse and dependence.

Yoga

Because of its emphasis on focus, concentration, and impulse control, Sure Haven believes in the integration of yoga. Individuals who abuse drugs and alcohol or engage in other addictive behaviors often feel compelled to follow their urges and let their thoughts and emotions dictate their actions.

Yoga, which teaches slow, controlled movements instead of reactive, automatic behaviors, helps practitioners become more aware of their self-defeating thoughts and triggers for use and achieve greater self-mastery and self-control. As an individual becomes more adept in the art of yoga, these skills spill over into every area of life, encouraging moderation rather than extremism or compulsive behavior.

Mindfulness Training

The primary purpose of mindfulness training at Sure Haven is the cultivation of mindfulness. Mindfulness can be described as the moment-to-moment awareness of phenomena and experience, without the influence of distorted thinking, expectations, or desires. A second therapeutic purpose is the self-regulation of mental distress and emotional arousal through the development of a non-judgmental attitude and self-acceptance.

Mindfulness Training is a form of secular meditation that can increase the ability to relax, enhance energy and enthusiasm for life, increase self-esteem and concentration, and improve the ability to cope with stress.
